Dysphagia drinking cup with 4 mm controlled-flow spout

The HaseMed Drinking Cup with Handle and 4 mm Spout is a lightweight adaptive drinking aid designed for patients with swallowing difficulties (dysphagia). The narrow 4 mm spout releases liquid in small, measured sips, giving stroke survivors, people living with Parkinson's disease, post-operative patients and frail elderly residents a safer, more controlled way to stay hydrated. Made from food-grade polypropylene with a leak-resistant closure lid and an ergonomic open-loop handle, the cup is built for daily ward, rehabilitation and home-care use.

Why a 4 mm spout matters for dysphagia

Patients with impaired swallowing reflexes need slow, thin streams of liquid they can manage without aspiration. A standard mug delivers too much volume per sip, while a very wide spout can flood the oral cavity. The 4 mm opening on this cup limits each sip to a small, predictable bolus, helping speech and language therapists and nursing staff support safer oral intake during rehabilitation. For patients who can tolerate larger sips, HaseMed also offers a 12 mm spout version; this 4 mm variant is the tighter, more cautious option for early-stage recovery and fragile swallowers.

Key features

  • 4 mm narrow-flow spout: Releases liquid in controlled, small sips to support patients with dysphagia, reduced swallow reflex or poor oral coordination.
  • Leak-resistant closure lid: Snap-on lid with a raised spout channel keeps contents secure even when the cup is tilted or knocked over on a bedside table.
  • Ergonomic open-loop handle: Wide handle lets users hook fingers through for a secure grip, ideal for weakened hand strength, tremor or arthritic joints.
  • Ultra-lightweight (approx. 26 g): Minimal lifting effort reduces fatigue during long sessions and repeated hydration prompts.
  • Food-grade polypropylene (PP): Impact-resistant, BPA-free plastic that tolerates daily institutional use without cracking or staining.
  • Translucent body with fill level visible: Caregivers can monitor intake at a glance, important for hydration charts and fluid-balance tracking.
  • Dishwasher-safe (top rack): Quick turnaround between patients and residents in care homes, hospitals and rehab clinics.
  • Suitable for hot and cold drinks: Water, tea, juice, thickened fluids and isotonic drinks at appropriate serving temperatures.

Who this cup is for

  • Stroke rehabilitation: Supports safer oral intake during dysphagia therapy after a cerebrovascular event.
  • Parkinson's disease and neurodegenerative conditions: Helps patients with tremor, bradykinesia or impaired swallow coordination drink more independently.
  • Post-operative recovery: Useful after head and neck surgery, oral surgery or procedures that temporarily affect swallowing.
  • Geriatric and long-term care: A practical hydration aid for elderly residents with age-related swallowing changes or reduced hand strength.
  • Palliative and hospice care: Gentle, low-effort drinking support for patients who tire quickly.
  • Paediatric and special-needs care: Controlled flow suits children with oral-motor difficulties under therapist supervision.

How to use

  1. Wash the cup and lid before first use with warm soapy water or run through the dishwasher top rack.
  2. Fill with the desired beverage. For hot drinks, allow the liquid to cool to a safe drinking temperature first.
  3. Snap the closure lid firmly onto the rim so the spout sits upright.
  4. Support the patient in an upright, seated position following any guidance from a speech and language therapist.
  5. Pass the cup so the user can grip the handle with their dominant hand.
  6. Tilt the cup gently; the 4 mm spout releases a small, controlled stream. Encourage unhurried, single-sip swallowing between each portion.
  7. After use, empty, rinse and place on the top rack of the dishwasher or wash by hand.

Care and handling tips for clinical teams

  • Label individual cups with resident or patient initials where single-user assignment is required by infection-control policy.
  • Inspect the spout and rim for cracks before each use and replace the cup if damage is visible.
  • Do not place on an open flame or use in the microwave when contents are already hot.
  • Combine with a non-slip placemat for residents with limited coordination to keep the cup stable on the table.
  • Document fluid intake on the resident's hydration chart using the visible level through the translucent wall.

Pack sizes

Available as single units for personal use, and in 3, 10 and 50 packs for wards, nursing homes, rehabilitation clinics, day centres and home-care agencies that need a reliable stock of adaptive drinking aids.

Important safety note

This drinking cup is a supportive daily-living aid and is not a medical device that treats dysphagia on its own. Always follow the swallowing assessment and recommendations of a qualified speech and language therapist, nurse or physician when selecting cups and fluid consistencies for patients with impaired swallowing. Check the temperature of hot drinks before handing the cup to the user.
